One new genus, Paramphimonhystrella gen. nov., and three new species of free-living marine nematodes in this genus, P. elegans sp. nov., P. minor sp. nov., and P. sinica sp. nov., are described and illustrated from the Yellow Sea, China. Paramphimonhystrella gen. nov. differs from the similar genus Amphimonhystrella by the elongated buccal cavity, cervical setae and large caudal glands. Paramphimonhystrella elegans sp. nov. is characterized by ovoid amphids and spicules with a small hook at distal end and cylindrical part of tail shorter than conical part. Paramphimonhystrella sinica sp. nov. is characterized by circular amphids, wide buccal cavity, spicules with blunt tip, and cylindrical part of tail longer than conical part. Paramphimonhystrella minor sp. nov. differs from the other two species by its smaller body (shorter than 800 mm), circular amphids, and spicules with sharp tip. The type species of this new genus is P. elegans gen. nov. and sp. nov. Types are deposited in the College of Marine Life Sciences, Ocean University of China.

Be]bolla stenocephalum can be scparated from other species by the number of oesophageal bulbs (eight), the length of the spicules and the structure ofgubemacular apophysis. Betbolla wanoicki sp. nov. is characterizcd by the number of ocsophageal bulbs (seven), reduced prccloacal supplcments and the structure of gubemacular apophysis. A key to thc genus Betbdla is prm, ided to facditate species idcntification. Types arc deposited in the College of Life Science and Technology, Ocean University of China.

Densities of major meiofaunal taxa were investigated at 34 sampling stations during six cruises by R/V Beidon to the stuthern Yellow Sea. China from 2000 to 2004, and the community structure of free-living marine nematodes was studied during one of the cruises in 2003. Meiofauna abundance ranged from 487.4 to 1655.3 individuals per 10cm2. Nematodes and harpacticoid copepods were the two most dominant groups. Contributing 73.8-92.8% and 3.5-18.7%. respectively to the total meiofauna abundance. One way ANOVA showed no significant annual fluctuation of meiofauna and nematode abundances from 2000 to 2004 in the southern Yellow Sea. However, two way ANOVA based on six stations sampled in 4 years (2002-2004) showed that there were significant difierences among the six stations and the 4 sampling years for meiofauna, nematode and copepod abundance. Conelation analysis demonstrated that meiofauna abundance was mainly linked to chloroplastie pigments. Other euviconmental factors could not be ruled out, however. A total of 232 free-living marine nematode species, bekonging to 149 genera. 35 families and 4 orders, were identified. The dominant species in the sampling arca were the following: Donylaimopsis rabataisi, Microluimus sp.1. Prochromadorella sp., Promanohystera sp., Cobbia sp. 1, Daptonema sp. 1, eptotaims sp. 1, Hatataimus sp.2, Aegiataataimus sp., Chromadorita sp., Parodontophora narina. Parasphaerolations paradoxas. Qundricoma sp. 1, Compylaimus sp. 1, Halalainus gratilis, Parame sacanthiop sp. 1, Putunonohystera sp. 1, and Metalinhomoens longixseta .CLUSTER and SIMPROF analyses revealed three maia types of nematode community (or station groups) in the sampling area, including 1: coastal community. H: transitory community betwcca coastal and YSCWM (Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass), and III: YSCWM community. Each community was indicated by a number of dominant nematode species. Bio-Eny conelation analysis between the mematodc community and cnxirommental variables showed that water depth, sediment water content. Organic mather, chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and phacophorbide a (Pha-a) were the most important factors to determine the commurity structose.

Frecliving marine nematodes were sampled on two occasions from an extonsive grid of 20 stations in the Bohai Sca and its approaches. Differences within stations between sampling periods were small, resulting from small changes in abundance of dominant species. Differences between stations were significant, and were used to cluster stations into groups with similar species composition. These station groupings revealed a weak faunal gradient leading from the mouth of the Huanghe (Yellow River) to the Bohai Strait. Analyses relating faunal composition to environmental variables showed that there were significant differences in environmental variables between faunally-defined groups of stations. The variables most closely correlated with community structure were silt/clay and sand, depth, phacopigment concentrations below the sediment surface, organic content and arsenic. These reflect natural processes within the Bohai Sea. A suite of univariate measures were related to distance from the river mouth, with a major discontinuity about 120km into the Bohai Sea. Comparison of values of the biodiversity measures average taxonomic distinctness (△-) and variation in taxonomic distinctness (△+) suggest that the mciobenthos of the Bohai Sea as a whole is not under major pollution stress.
